October 5 questions:
Q1: How were "More
Annoying Songs" recorded? And how long did it take?
A: When this project (Exile Studios)
started, I was using an Adat, a 16 track Mackie mixer and few cheap outboard
effects. I decided to keep this format throughout the entire CD to keep
the continuity of the songs the same as the studio grew. *
Q2: What input does Rick
Warsing have on the musical arrangements?
A: Rick is pretty much free to play
what he likes. If I were to control his playing, it would be unfair to
his natural talent. There is a magic between us in the studio.
Like I will imagine a guitar lick or a solo, and he would be playing it note
for note without me even saying anything! It's like he takes these notes
outta' thin air and they end up on tape.
Q3: Do you have a favorite song on
this CD?
A: I like Oxydynamo...It's
one of the more pliable tunes on the CD. Rick came up with the Bass riff
when I was getting a bass sound for him for a completely different
track. I recorded 8 or 9 minutes of this and put it aside. A few
weeks later I played it back to Rick with piano, vocals and drums. He
was amazed and we immediately recorded guitars to give it that dark bluesy
feel. And to top it off me old band mate Ron
Griffiths helped out on backing vocals. So all in all it's a magical
tune!
Q4: Why is it called "More
Annoying Songs"?
A: Because it's annoying.
Q5: Would you be willing to hook up
with Ron Griffiths again?
A: Most definitely! I should
think the next CD I write will feature Ron on a lot more tracks. It all
depends on his availability. I have been encouraging him to write songs
again, as he was, and probably still is a talent to be reckoned with.
* Exile Studio has been moved to a new
premises and is currently under construction as a brand new 24 track pro
studio for future releases.
